How Mutual Funds Report Capital Gains Distributions

The mutual fund will report your capital gain distributions on the Form 1099-DIV or substitute statement that it sends to you each year.

In addition to the total amount of capital gain distributions, the statement from your mutual fund may include separate entries for the portion of your capital gain distributions that is 28% rate gain, unrecaptured section 1250 gain , or section 1202 gain.

We'll ask you for the amounts in the various boxes on your 1099-DIV and automatically carry the entries to the correct places on your return. Enter the information from your Form 1099-DIV in the Dividend Income section of the Interview.
