Under this method, you assume that the shares sold were the first ones you purchased, and use their adjusted basis as your basis. Assuming the market has been rising over time, selling the oldest shares first means selling those that produce the highest taxable profit. That's why this is the default method: the one IRS assumes you use unless you choose otherwise.
