Writes/wrote obituaries for a living (Lends to him becoming cynical, suicidal, and ultimately insane). After writing about all of the little deaths he realizes that thousands of people die having spent their lifes making no difference to the world whatsoever. This is why he did whatever it is he does and kills himself. He was going to die anyways. Reason he commited a memorable martyrdom as opposed to just starting a revolution or something and staying alive. Has multiple personality disorder-- in which he actual sees and talks to an 'evil' version of himself. This evil self is only around after Max wakes up, suggesting that his original "suicide" was the splitting of his american everyday-man ignorance and innocence and his cynical and satirical psychotic self. The audience plays as the innocent Max, while the 'evil' Max is the one setting up puzzles and dragging him back to the chair and writing messages. When the innocent Max meets the evil Max, the innocent Max needs to be persuaded by the evil Max why what he/they/Max is doing is good. Note that when I reffer to them as "evil" and "innocent" I don't actually mean that. That's just easy to say, and is what the players will initially assume until I (Hopefully) change their opinions about the world. Really I should be saying "ignorant" Max and "enlightened" Max. After persuaded, innocent Max falls to the ground dead.
