Zombies do still have armour values, just there is no durability. Source: minecraft wiki and own testing.
I know this because its impossible to drop them to half a heart and they also must be damaged the equivalent of 22 health before dieing.

Skeletons, zombies and creepers all have the same drop height (ignoring zombies armour). This means while it is impossible to get zombies to a half heart by dropping, if it was precise enough you could theoretically separate them.

How did you get trip wire before it comes out? I know it is a snapshot, but I dont understand the actual action of playing minecraft in a patch that hasnt come out yet.

Usually every Thursday, Mojang will put up the latest Snapshot for download on their site (Mojang.com). By simply replacing the minecraft JAR file, you can test out the Snapshot.

Would it be possible to use thise to determine different types of mobs depending on pulse length, then make a mob trap by making each mob hit a platfrom at the right height so they only have half a heart left?

I don't think it would be precise enough. Also, a few mobs share the same dimensions, so I don't know how you'd differentiate them :p
