You fall through because when the cauldron is pushed by a piston, it becomes an entity, much the same way TNT does when primed. Try it, prime some TNT, then walk into it. You go straight through. Same with the cauldron when pushed by a piston.

@SimplySarc when i say a 2x? Piston loop i mean effectively what you have but taking up about 1/6 of the space.

I'm not sure if I follow. Do you mean a 2X2 loop? If so, I don't think it could be done without having a piston exposed.
