Sample Pack Contest VI - Scoring Template

- Scores are out of 100, where 100 = faultless/perfect, and 0 = totally void of merit/worst song ever.
- Do not use fractions.
- Commenting on songs is optional.

Some aspects to consider when scoring:
- Sound design: ingenuity with and manipulation of the source samples, modification of samples to create new sounds, etc.
- Composition: structure, melody, harmony, rhythm, basically how well written you think the song itself is, etc.
- Production: mixing/mastering (balance between instruments, overall loudness if it's a factor), stereo field use, frequency spectrum use (good use of EQ), use of effects, etc.
- Overall enjoyment: simply how much you like the song.
- Anything else you deem important.

consider these elements on a case by case basis, as some may be more or less applicable depending on the song. how much you factor each into your scoring is up to you - if you wish, you may set aside a certain number of points for each element if it makes the judging process easier for you, however the total scores are the only thing that will be relevant in score calculations.

a general comment from me: i tried not to take note of which songs each person wrote as i received them, and just listened to them later to check that they were acceptable for the contest. i've got a list of what everyone did in a separate text file but i'm not looking at it while i vote! unavoidably, i know which songs a few people wrote, but i actually can't remember who wrote most of them.

Comments: Not bad! Feels like boss music. The mixing is pretty gross, certainly could have used some work. My mind starts to wander a bit after having listened to this for a while.

Comments: "I fucking hate cats." Pretty decent. Nice production work.

Comments: I'm certain this entry is going to raise eyebrows fairly universally. It's almost hard to believe this only used the source samples. The amount of editing and production going on here is really impressive. While I cannot detect many of the samples, I'd give you the benefit of the doubt. In the spirit of the contest it's tough to judge something like this. Really polished stuff nonetheless, good job.

Comments: My favourite of the three things I made, which I didn't expect... also the best produced of the three too. I just wanted to write a simplistic, atmospheric song. I guess that's it. Somehow it turned out jazzy :J also I guess the vocoder use is a little cheeky.

Comments: I am... an enormous fan. haha. it's so much fun. amazing job with this one. it's got everything, great chords, rhythm, melody, control and utilisation of sounds. Kind of makes me think of Sonic R/3D Blast music, with some Mega Man Network Transmission thrown in for good measure.

Comments: Too repetitive for my taste, although I can hear some detailed work and some structure to this. It feels like you laid down sounds arbitrarily and made rhythms with them though.

Extra Antler Velvet
Comments: aaaaahh so catchy, lush chords (so author), real cute stuff. Just a shame it's all so distorted and also pretty short. In terms of composition, this is one of my favourites, just lacks the finesse of other songs. The vocal use is also real clever. "Fuck yeah, fuck yeah fuck yeah."

Comments: Almost overlooked this one. Pretty great editing of the sounds and lots of effects processing going on. It's hard to compare this to any of the other entries. It's pretty damn long though, and - dare I say it - unnecessarily so. Some nice composition here though. Cool.

Comments: I lol'd. After the can is open the tune that follows is pretty nice! Love the use of the chord samples.

Comments: Top notch editing and processing. Great fun to listen to as well. SUPERPROG. The pulse lead reminds me of the mushroom trip part of Mother 3, and the solos on the vocal lead sounds sort of virt-y. Overall, FACKIN GOOD.

Comments: Sounds kind of like "Corruption of the Tune" and I've got the same criticisms mainly - too repetitive and arbitrary careless use of the sounds. There's some cool editing here and there though, liked the envelope stuff on the square sound.

Legend of Sample Pack Compo
Comments: Really love the opening to this, the use of chords there is really pretty. In fact, I like the use of chords all the way through this, like at 2:00. It's got a minimalistic feel which I quite like, I can imagine it as being underscore for a visual novel or CGI movie. On the downside, there's a lot of DC clicks that could have been cleaned up. The parts with the plucked/FM bass sound just repeats far too much, it feels like a really obvious way of artificially extending the song length. In general it feels like you didn't spend a lot of time on this.

Comments: God this is so good and well made/sequenced. Fucking love the soloing on the leads. Perfect ending too. I lol'd multiple times, so funny. Expecting this one to rank well.

Comments: Oh lawd it's Electrolysis Aquatica II! Top notch production skills on show, no idea how you get those samples to sound so clean and... well, not shitty and random. Solid composition too. I think this will be a strong contender.

Comments: Quirky song. Parts of it are really pretty and other bits are strange and dissonant/random. It is at least interesting. Lots of dc clicks on the recording, whole mix feels a bit mucky.

Comments: I hope "Omnious" was the correct song title. Anyway this is good, feels like two different songs in one though. I lol'd at the Street Fighter 2-esque bass :D second half is definitely better. A little on the quiet side overall, but not bad.

Comments: Nice song, I enjoy the atmosphere it has. Certainly sounds a lot like some Super Nintendo soundtracks. The whole thing is pretty sparse though and relies too heavily on repetitions for my tastes.
