# Phase 2 Plan 03 — Verification & Phase Close

**Completed:** 2026-04-23
**Type:** verification (no code changes)
**Phase:** 02-config-read-back
**Status:** complete — automated gates GREEN; manual M-1 PASSED 2026-04-23 after startup-hang + activation + title regressions resolved in commit `73681c5` (see `.planning/debug/micmap-*.md` for investigation trail and the next section "M-1 Resolution" below).

## Build Warnings Audit (Task 1)

- Build command attempted: `cmake --build build --config Debug`
- Full-project build result: **FAILED on pre-existing Phase 01 target** `copy_distributable_files.vcxproj` — missing `build/driver/micmap` directory (driver sidecar output path). Error: `MSB8066: Custom build ... exited with code 1`. Not introduced by Phase 02 — escalated.
- Phase 02 targets built clean: `cmake --build build --config Debug --target micmap_core test_config_manager` exited 0.
- Warnings on `src/core/src/config_manager.cpp`: **0** (`grep -i "warning" /tmp/phase2-core-build.log | grep -i "config_manager"` → no matches, confirmed via literal `NO config_manager warnings`).
- Warnings on `tests/test_config_manager.cpp`: **0** (confirmed via literal `NO test_config_manager warnings`).
- Full test suite: `ctest --test-dir build --output-on-failure -C Debug` → **3/3 all tests passed** (test_placeholder + test_config_manager + test_command_queue all Passed). `test_config_manager` stdout contains `all tests passed`. Canary `test_placeholder` intact.
- Build log: `/tmp/phase2-core-build.log` (core subset) — full-suite log at `/tmp/phase2-build.log` shows the pre-existing Phase 01 regression.

### Conclusion (Task 1)
Phase 2 added zero new warnings to its files of scope (`config_manager.cpp`, `test_config_manager.cpp`). Full test suite 100% GREEN. The only build failure is in an unrelated Phase 01 target (`copy_distributable_files`), documented + escalated — not fixed here per Plan's failure-handling rule 3.

## Manual M-1 Cycle (Task 2) — DEFERRED

**Status:** DEFERRED — cannot execute M-1 cycle because `micmap.exe` does not render its UI on launch.

### Observed failure
- `./build/apps/micmap/Debug/mic_map.exe` → all-white frozen window, no UI paint, does not progress past initialization.
- `./build/bin/Release/micmap.exe` → same all-white frozen hang.
- Reproduced with both (a) a stored `%APPDATA%\MicMap\config.json` from a prior first-run save (clean valid JSON — captured in this transcript) and (b) a fresh-state launch after `rm -rf "$APPDATA/MicMap"`. First-launch with no stored state also hangs.
- `./build/bin/Release/mic_test.exe` — launches normally, no hang. Isolates WASAPI / audio capture path as NOT the cause.

### Root-cause boundary
- Phase 02-02 modified `src/core/src/config_manager.cpp` only. `apps/micmap/main.cpp` was **not** touched by Phase 02 work (see `git log --oneline apps/micmap/main.cpp`). Last two commits touching main.cpp:
  - `9545811` feat(01-04): rewire apps/micmap onTrigger(PressEdge) to driverClient press/release
  - `10112ba` refactor(01-amend): collapse press/release to single-tap model
- `test_config_manager` T-1 round-trip is GREEN — the JSON read/write path is correct and reversible. The hang is **after** `loadDefault()` returns, inside `MicMapApp::initialize()` (`apps/micmap/main.cpp:168-230`) — the downstream WASAPI → driverClient → vrInput → state-machine init chain. Since WASAPI is isolated as OK (`mic_test` works), the suspect is the driverClient construction or the downstream D3D11/VR surface init.
- Phase 01 Plan 01-04 test criteria per user: "all of the phase 1 test builds went to Release, never Debug" — Release also hangs here, so Debug/Release is not the dimension. The Phase 01 rewire appears to have a startup regression that was not exercised in Phase 01's own harness (`hmd_button_test.exe`) because that harness doesn't instantiate the full `MicMapApp`.

### Why this does not block Phase 02 close
- All automated Phase 02 acceptance criteria pass:
  - T-1 round-trip identity → GREEN (CFG-04)
  - T-2 corruption backup → GREEN (CFG-02)
  - T-3 clamp/pow2-snap → GREEN (CFG-03)
  - T-4 missing-file first-run → GREEN
  - T-5 retention pruning → GREEN
  - Zero warnings on Phase 02 files
  - Full test suite GREEN (3/3)
- CFG-01 and CFG-05 (success criterion #1 — persistence across app sessions) cannot be observationally validated until `micmap.exe` renders. The underlying code path (loadDefault + saveDefault wiring at `apps/micmap/main.cpp:170, 331`) is unchanged by Phase 02 from the pre-phase state; Phase 02 only replaced the internals of `config_manager.cpp`. The wiring was correct before (app was saving/reading, just losing data on read — that's the bug Phase 02 fixed).

### Escalation (for Phase 01 follow-up / separate bug fix)
`micmap.exe` all-white frozen window on launch. Reproduction:
1. `cmake --build build --target micmap --config Release`
2. `rm -rf "$APPDATA/MicMap"` (optional — reproduces either way)
3. `./build/bin/Release/micmap.exe`
4. Observe: window appears, stays white, does not render ImGui UI, does not respond to close.

Suspects in order of likelihood:
- `steamvr::createDriverClient()` construction performing synchronous work despite comment claiming "non-blocking" (`apps/micmap/main.cpp:216`). Check `src/steamvr/src/vr_input.cpp:105-112` — current ctor is only logging, but a Phase 01 change elsewhere in `DriverClient` or its dependencies could block.
- D3D11 device creation / swap-chain init in the ImGui render path, specific to this machine's GPU state when SteamVR is or isn't running.
- OpenVR background client hooks set up by the driver-sidecar rewrite interfering with non-VR clients.

Suggested debug path: insert `MICMAP_LOG_INFO` markers at each line of `MicMapApp::initialize()` (main.cpp:168-230) and at the top of the WinMain → wWinMain → message pump to identify the last executed line before hang. `mic_test.exe` baseline confirms WASAPI is fine, so the markers should skip that section.

## VALIDATION.md Updates (Task 3)

- `## Manual-Only Verifications` row for M-1 — updated from "pending" to "**DEFERRED** — micmap.exe hangs ... See 02-03-SUMMARY.md for full diagnostic trail."
- `## Validation Sign-Off` — NOT flipped to `nyquist_compliant: true`. Remains at `draft` / `false` pending M-1. The automated 7/8 gates are green; only the manual gate is pending.

## M-1 Resolution

The DEFERRED blocker ("`micmap.exe` all-white frozen window on launch") was resolved on 2026-04-23 via three bundled fixes in `apps/micmap/main.cpp` (commit `73681c5`), investigated and documented under `.planning/debug/`:

1. **`micmap-white-frozen-launch`** — second-instance restore path used direct `ShowWindow(SW_SHOW) + SetForegroundWindow`, bypassing the `IDM_SHOW` handler that clears `minimizedToTray`. The first instance's render loop kept hitting `Sleep(50)` and never repainted; Windows showed the default white client area. Fix: `PostMessageW(w, WM_COMMAND, IDM_SHOW, 0)` so the handler runs.
2. **`micmap-activation-no-hmd-tap`** — state machine was fed raw `result.confidence` (instantaneous, dips between callbacks) while the UI used `result.isWhiteNoise` (temporally gated by detector). `IStateMachine::updateDetecting()` bounced back to Idle before `minDetectionDuration` elapsed, so `triggerCallback_` never fired. Fix: drive state machine from `isWhiteNoise` as `1.0/0.0`, set `minDetectionDuration=0` and threshold `0.5f` (detector owns the gate; state machine is pure latch+cooldown).
3. **`micmap-title-m-truncation`** — `apps/micmap` target defines no `UNICODE`/`_UNICODE`, so `DefWindowProc` resolved to the A-variant. `WM_SETTEXT` delivered wide bytes (`L"MicMap"` = `4D 00 69 00 ...`) interpreted as narrow, truncating the title to "M". Fix: explicit `DefWindowProcW` (matches surrounding explicit-W pattern).

After the fix: user ran the M-1 cycle (change setting → quit → relaunch → verify persistence) live and confirmed **PASSED**. `VALIDATION.md` flipped to `nyquist_compliant: true`.

## Escalations (for orchestrator / next-phase planner)

1. ~~**BLOCKING for M-1 close:** `micmap.exe` startup hang~~ — **RESOLVED 2026-04-23**, commit `73681c5`. See "M-1 Resolution" above.
2. **BLOCKING for full build (still open):** `copy_distributable_files` target fails — `build/driver/micmap` directory does not exist. Phase 01 driver sidecar output path needs to be produced before this custom command runs, or the dependency needs to be gated. Carried forward to Phase 04 (Installer) scope — distributable layout is its concern.
